    Dear April,

I have a dilemma. My boyfriend called me last night when I was on my way back home to swing by and pick him up since I was passing by. I said sure, it was on the way anyway. Then he called back two minutes later and said there was a change of plans, he had to take his mother to run some errands and he would come over later that evening. I said that was fine. I waited for him to arrive and nothing at all, not even a phone call. It was strange he has never done this before the whole year and half we have been together. I didn’t call to find out what happened as I was royally pissed. It is the next day and I still haven’t heard from him. I was going to call but don’t want to give him the upperhand in thinking that I waited for him as he ruined my evening. How should I handle this when he calls to punish him but not make him think that I care? I still have contacted him and he hasn’t contacted me either. I figured that I would let him call me twice before answering his calls and then when I talk to him act really aloof and tell him I’m too busy to hang out if he asks. Just need some advice.

Rather than punish him, find out what happened. It’s entirely possible that there was an accident or his mother became ill. You’d look pretty bad for not finding out if everyone is okay and instead jumping to a conclusion that your time is more important than his safety or his mother’s health.

My advice is to contact him and find out if everything is okay. Assume the best unless you have reason to believe otherwise.
