I need advice on how to politely turn down a coworker. I’m not good at turning people down, but it becomes more difficult when it’s someone I’m going to have to continue to see at work. There’s a guy at work who has been making it fairly clear lately that he likes me, and he’s come very close to asking me out a few times already, so I feel like it’s going to happen soon. He’s definitely attractive, but he’s just not my type. I feel flattered that he likes me, but I think in the end I’m probably not his type either. I really don’t want to make things awkward at work. Advice please?

When he asks you out, just say that you are flattered but not interested. Just be honest and kind about it. It shouldn’t make things awkward.

I like NeilPearson‘s advice. Because it’s a co-worker it’s important to maintain civility and try not to make things awkward since you’re going to see each other and work together daily. But be clear about your answer so there’s no room for mistakes.

I hope that helps. Let me know how it goes, and please follow me @AskAprilcom on Twitter and on Facebook at this link: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001113133958.
