I’ve recently been flirting with this girl I don’t know all that well, but whom I see and talk to every day at work. She seems really nice as well as really attracted to me. I finally manned up and asked her out in a private moment. She seemed really happy and said she’s love to go out with me. I asked her phone number so I could call her after work, and she gave it to me.

I called her later in the evening, but she was on her way out with her girlfriends (or at least so she says), so I said I’d call her some other day instead. The next day at work she asked to speak with me and led me to a private area, where she told me she was really flattered and happy I had asked her out, but that “things were weird” in her life right now so she couldn’t go out with me. She was nice about it so it didn’t sting too much. We’re still on good terms and friendly towards each other.

I find particularly younger girls difficult to “get” as they sometimes seem very whimsical, so I need some advice here. I have a really big crush on her, so I like to keep my options open in case she changes her mind. The “weird things” in her life might just be some excuse, or it might be real – in which case I’m also a bit cautious. What is my best strategy for this situation – or should I just move on?

Wait a month or two, while continuing to flirt with her, and ask her out again. It’s the only way you’ll know if she’s really got things going on in her life that are keeping her from dating you or if she was just blowing you off. Don’t worry about rejection — just stay the course.
