I belong to a book club and there’s a woman who attends who I am very attracted to and would like to ask out. The problem is that the last time the group met she came in with an oxygen tank. I guess she has been diagnosed with a degenerative heart condition and is going to be wearing an oxygen cannula from now on. We get along great and I would like to see her more but I don’t know if I could emotionally deal with her condition. Should I just continue to just be her friend?

Invite her to have coffee with you — it’s a starter date and can’t be misconstrued as anything else. Get to know her a little better and test yourself to see if your feelings about her change, the more you get to know her.

I took your advice and we talked at the coffee shop our club meets at for a long time after the meeting was over. We talked so long her oxygen tank ran out and I ended up helping her replace it with a fresh one. All in all I think we had a good time talking. I think we’ll do it again.
