I am currently going through a break-up with someone I was with for 3 years. I still care about him and love him, but I want this to be a legitimate breakup and try to keep it under control as much as possible. I know there is a reason why we broke up, but sometimes I catch myself dwelling on the good and conveniently only remembering the good. Can you please explain some good tips on getting over someone and managing a break up as best as possible?

Break ups are hard — there’s no question about it. Some of the best things you can do are to keep busy and start a new chapter in your life. Old friends and old haunts will remind you of the relationship — so try making new friends, and checking out new coffee shops, new gyms, and doing things differently — from taking a different route to work to having a party with all new people in your life!

Seek out the support of friends and family so you’re not alone and missing him. Let people who may fix you up, know that you’re single. And never say no to a makeover! Whether it’s cleaning out your closets, getting new pillows in your living room, gardening, cutting your hair (drastically!) or giving yourself a new makeup or wardrobe makeover, new is good when you’ve just broken up with someone.

I hope that helps. Let me know how things go, and please follow me @AskAprilcom on Twitter and on Facebook at this link: .
