My boyfriend of a year and a half asked me to marry him last night. I have known since the beginning that he was the one… but I am just a senior in high school and he is in his freshman year of college. I love him and I want to marry him but I am worried that it may affect my studies.

Also, my mother got married before she was supposedly entering into college. She never went. Instead she ended up getting divorced and raising three children on her own working a minimum wage job.

I love my boyfriend with all my heart but do you think I may be jumping the gun on getting married so soon?

My mother has always warned me against it.

Your instincts (and your mother) are right. It’s too soon for you to get married. Just because you love someone doesn’t mean that this is the right time in your life to marry them. You’re probably barely 18 and still in high school. You’re right — it’s time for you to focus on your education, but you can still date and have fun. Marriage isn’t just romance and whimsy. It’s a legal arrangement, it’s a living arrangement, it’s an extended family arrangement, and it even involves the business of running a relationship when groceries and health insurance and all kinds of unsexy but necessary things are involved. It’s too soon for you.

“No” is a complete sentence. Use it.

I hope that helps. Please follow me @AskAprilcom on Twitter and on Facebook at this link: .
