I think it’s a good idea to break up with him for this reason. If you can’t break up with him face to face, then do your best — whether it’s an e-mail or a phone call. Obviously, you’ll get a better sense of closure if you break up face to face, but everyone does what they’re able to.
In terms of what to say, be clear. If you’re going to break up with him and don’t want to see him again, then tell him that. You can do it gracefully, without being nasty by saying something like, “This hasn’t worked out for me, and that’s why I’m ending the relationship. I won’t see you again because that’s the best thing for me. Good luck.” I think it’s a good idea to tell him why you’re breaking up with him, so that you feel like you have closure. If you don’t, you may find yourself unable to let go and move on. 😉
