Did he really like me or did he just want me to admit my feelings?

I have a male friend, and we are very close best friends. We talk every day and are very comfortable with each other. However, I started to realize that I was falling for him but I tried to stop myself because I knew it could ruin our friendship.
Sometimes, he seemed to notice my feelings and would jokingly ask, “You have a crush on me, don’t you?” or “Am I the one you like?” But I would always deny it.

Then one day, while we were talking, he suddenly told me that something had been bothering him. He confessed that he had started to like me, but he did not want us to become more than friends because he did not want to lose the closeness we shared. He liked me, but he did not want our relationship to move to the next level.

After telling me this, he asked if I liked him too. Of course, I finally admitted my feelings.
Now, I keep wondering: Did he tell me that because he genuinely liked me, or was he just trying to get me to confess my feelings? Or maybe he really liked me but was afraid of commitment?

Did he really like me or did he just want me to admit my feelings?
