My wife and I have been separated for three years. Recently over dinner I asked her about us and she replied that she needs time to work on herself. Is that a nice way of telling me its over?

I don’t think she’s telling you it’s over, as much as she’s telling you she wants to sustain the status quo. I don’t know how old she is, or how long you’ve been married, but if an adult marries and separates, and three years later says she’s not ready to get back together because she needs more time to “work on herself”, she’s either very (very, very, very, very) slow at life or giving you an excuse to maintain the status quo because she likes it.
