I’ve always wondered this. I feel like the term “dating” is very ambiguous and it seems like there is a lot of different views on this. When two people say “we’re dating” what exactly does that mean? What are the rules? Can you see other people? if not then why not just call it a relationship?

I can answer your academic questions, but it’s a lot better if you ask me situation-specific questions.

Two people who are dating spend time together outside of work or school and the date is initiated with a specific request to go out together. If you read Think & Date Like A Man, https://www.askapril.com/relationship-dating-advice/think-and-date-like-a-man.html, a dating book I wrote for women, or Date Out of Your League, https://www.askapril.com/relationship-dating-advice/date-out-of-your-league.html, one I wrote for men, you’ll see the rules in black and white!

You can definitely date other people at the same time. Becoming monogamous is a commitment that raises the level of investment in a relationship.

    I hope that helps!
