I broke up with my ex about 5 weeks ago. I avoided any type of contact thereafter. I stopped checking his social media accounts and pretty much cut off anything that reminded me of him. It actually helped. A few days after the break up i was feeling better. But we needed to settle something about shared assets. And now we’re in contact again. He’s asking for more time to clear stuff from his end. I thought i was okay but him coming into the picture now is getting me all upset again. And it doesnt help that he’s being so kind and concerned with his messages. How do i stop myself from getting upset? The asset that we need to settle seems like its going to take more time than i anticipated.

Breaking up and getting over an ex is never a pat process. Your timeline for recovery is personal and unique — and it’s rarely a straight line from point A to point B. The best you can do for yourself is use boundaries and limit contact with him, as well as limit contact to parts of the day, like morning, where you have hours and hours to recover before bed. Use your best friends and family members to “debrief” after contact with him, and ask them to help you get over your feelings from a phone call or meeting with him. And stay busy. Smile at 20 new men every day, even if you don’t feel like it. You’ll be surprised how much a return smile can make you feel better about life. 😉
