It’s been said that if a spouse cheats and they decide to rebuild their marriage, the first step is that the one who cheated must have no contact with the lover ever again. What happens if they cheated with a close relative? How is the spouse who got cheated on ever supposed to heal and move on if they have to constantly see the other person?

It’s a lot easier if the people who cheated don’t see each other again, but that doesn’t usually happen in real life. Whether the person cheated with a relative, a family friend, a neighbor, a co-worker or an ex — there’s always that chance you’ll all bump into each other at holidays, by chance or because you travel in the same circles. And while this seems like a horrific turn of events, it’s actually an opportunity to practice being okay, processing feelings and having that moment when you do see each other (possibly with spouses), over with. Chances are, when there’s a betrayal, at least one or two of the people involved are dreading seeing each other or the other spouses, and getting it over can be a relief.
