Hi my name is Anne, 18 years old and I’ve known a guy who is 21 years old, for about 3 months. I’m wondering if what I feel for him is really love or just a simple crush. I feel happy when I’m with him, I think about him often, and yes, I sometimes get jealous when he talks to other girls but I’m not sure if that’s real love or just infatuation. He’s important to me and I also really enjoy being with him because he’s very funny, playful, has a great sense of humor and he always makes me laugh but I don’t want to rush my feelings because I feel like there’s a difference between a crush and real love.

How do you identify the difference of your feelings between true love and simply liking someone? Are there signs that it’s really love and not just infatuation?

In my belief, love has a very deep meaning and it is not something you can feel immediately at the start. I think you are only attracted to this person right now, but it is not yet love.

Let me give you an example. Love is not only for a boyfriend or husband; it can also be for your child, friends, or parents, and so on. So my example of love is when you are already willing to sacrifice your own interests, happiness, and so on for them. That is just one example.

I think you like him, but you can’t really say it’s that deep yet if you haven’t been through much together. You’ll only really know if it’s true love once you’re in a relationship and have spent time with the person through both the good and bad sides of who they are. If you can accept them even after seeing everything about them, that’s when you can say you truly love them.
